CAST HIGHLIGHT - Code Reader - Installation - Purpose of the folders - Location of the prepackaged CLI

Two folders are seen after the Highlight Code reader installation, "CAST Highlight Code Reader" folder and "cast-highlight-code-reader". By default both the installation are inside the %appdata% folder of the system.

This duplication of folders creates confusion for those users who wants to use the prepackaged CLI installed with the Code Reader (rather than installing and using another version of CLI separately).

Explanation

Two folders are installed with the Highlight Code Reader. One contains the program items and the other contains the appdata items used by code reader.

  • The path to the "CAST Highlight Code Reader" folder with program items is changeable when installing and the install window looks like this
2.jpg

It is where the code reader executable goes along with the more windows 'program' type files. It need not be named as “CAST Highlight Code Reader” and need not be in the %appdata% directory, it's wherever you want to put it and whatever you want to name it.

  • The other folder "cast-highlight-code-reader" is created in  %appdata% the PATH to which is normally not changed.

Once you start Code Reader, then it creates in %appdata% the directory cast-highlight-code-reader which contains the CLI and other items needed for Code Reader to operate.

Since the CLI is needed for the running of the Code Reader but not for the windows program installation, it's installed in the  %appdata%  area.

NB : Application Data or %appdata% is a specific folder within the user profile that stores application-specific data and settings. The specific subfolders and the actual data for individual applications are created during the first use of the application, not during installation. The path for %appdata%, is not normally changed as it requires a system-wide change that could affect multiple applications and potentially lead to compatibility issues.

The prepackaged CLI installed with the Code Reader can be updated within Highlight Code Reader without updating Highlight Code Reader itself. You can also update within Code Reader the CLI version to use by pointing to a CLI directory for use.

If you want to use the CLI outside of Code Reader, you can use the pre-packaged CLI within Code Reader, or you can download and unzip a version separately from Code Reader and use that version.
